A local club with big ambition.
Bantry Chess Club was founded in September 2024 with a simple goal: to create a welcoming place where anyone could enjoy chess.
Since then, the club has grown to more than 77 members, bringing together complete beginners, families, casual players, and experienced competitors.
In its first year, the club won the prestigious West Cork Chess Tournament, defeating established clubs from larger towns. Bantry Chess Club is now the current holder of the title, an affiliated member of the Irish Chess Union, and an active participant in the Munster Chess League.
Every Sunday, members gather not only to play chess, but also to learn, make friends, share ideas, and enjoy the atmosphere of Bridge Street Cafe.

A small group starts meeting weekly at Bridge Street Cafe.
- Winter 2024First 20 members
Word spreads across Bantry and beyond.
- Spring 2025Hosting Bandon at Bridge Street Cafe
Bantry Chess Club hosts Bandon Chess Club for an inter-town tournament at Bridge Street Cafe. More than 30 players and spectators create a fantastic atmosphere, and Bantry wins the tournament.
- Summer 2025Irish Chess Union affiliation
The club becomes officially affiliated.
- Autumn 2025West Cork Champions
Bantry Chess Club wins the West Cork Tournament, defeating established clubs in only its first competitive year.
- 2026Second anniversary
The club celebrates two years and 77+ members.
- Autumn 2026Hosting the tournament
Bantry hosts the West Cork Chess Tournament as title holders.
